Inauguration of Cinis Fertilizer’s first production facility

04.06.2024
Today was the official inauguration of Cinis Fertilizer’s production facility in Örnsköldsvik. With its fossil-free production method, the company is the first in the world to produce an environmentally friendly potassium sulfate that has a low carbon footprint. Cinis Fertilizer's circular business model is based on using industrial waste products as one of the inputs.

In mid-February 2023, ground was broken for Cinis Fertilizer's first production facility for circular and environmentally friendly potassium sulfate in Köpmanholmen, just outside Örnsköldsvik, Sweden. In May 2024, barely fifteen months after the groundbreaking ceremony, production was started up and today, the official inauguration ceremony was held.

The inauguration was attended by representatives of the Swedish government, Cinis Fertilizer's customers, partners, financiers and employees, as well as the municipality of Örnsköldsvik.

State Secretary to the Minister for Rural Affairs, Dan Ericsson, cut the ribbon together with Cinis Fertilizer's CEO and founder Jakob Liedberg, Van Iperen International’s Managing Director, Erik van den Bergh, and Anna-Britta Åkerlind, Mayor of Örnsköldsvik municipality.

“The steps that are now being taken are an important contribution to our and Europe’s food supply. The fact that it is also produced fossil-free is an important climate perspective. This facility will not only strengthen our country’s own capabilities, it also opens up opportunities for exports to other countries,” said Dan Ericsson in his speech.

“Some of us stood here just over a year ago to break the ground for the production plant. I am of course happy this happens right here, right now. Because we want to continue making things in Örnsköldsvik. A strong industrial sector has always been the backbone of Örnsköldsvik’s economy,” said Anna-Britta Åkerlind, Mayor of Örnsköldsvik municipality, in her speech.

“Thanks to everyone who made it possible for us to inaugurate Cinis Fertilizer’s first production facility today. I am proud of what we have achieved, and I am grateful for the support I have received since the start of the company. Today we have reached an important milestone with the production of potassium sulfate and sodium chloride. We have achieved this in record time,” says Jakob Liedberg, founder and CEO of Cinis Fertilizer.

“Cinis Fertilizer addresses a critical challenge for mankind – how we in a sustainable way are able to continue to supply enough food for a growing population. Mineral fertilizers have – and continue to be – crucial for the world’s food production. As an agronomist, I am extremely proud to be part of the development towards high-quality mineral fertilizers with a low climate footprint. Van Iperen is ready to distribute potassium sulfate from Cinis Fertilizer under our 'GreenSwitch' concept," says Erik van den Bergh, Managing Director of Van Iperen International.
